Sun Microsystems Unveils Enterprise AMP Stack for Solaris and Linux : Releases Open Source Java System Web Server into the OpenSolaris Community
PORTLAND, Ore. (Business Wire EON) July 23, 2008 -- Sun also announced that it is open sourcing the core components of the Sun Java(TM) System Web Server 7.0 and Sun Java(TM) System Web Proxy technologies under a BSD (Berkeley Software Distribution) license in the Web Stack sub-project of the OpenSolaris community. The Web and Proxy source code will be available in CY08Q3.http://www.opensolaris.org/os/project/webstack
"By open sourcing the core technology in our Web and Proxy server, Sun's goal is to give developers more flexibility, choice and help them achieve faster time to market," said Karen Tegan Padir, vice president of engineering, Software Infrastructure, Sun Microsystems. "Through Sun's enterprise-grade Web software Stack and Sun's Web and Proxy servers, enterprises and developers now have the option to standardize their development and production environments on open source technology."
"Sun's release of their Web and Proxy server code with a BSD license is proof of their involvement and commitment to open source. I am quite excited by the opportunities and possibilities that this provides, both as an Open Source community member, but also as a director, member and developer within the Apache Software Foundation," said Jim Jagielski.
About the Web Stack
Sun will provide product version control for its supported Web Stack across multiple operating systems so that applications developed for one operating system can be deployed on another with minimal changes. That means developers will have some of the latest and most complete technology solutions that the open source community has to offer. Enterprise support is planned to be available for Solaris in CY08Q3, Linux (LAMP) support in CY08Q4 with Windows and other OS support to follow.
The Web stack consists of Web and proxy servers, scripting languages and a database that enables developers to deploy Web applications quickly and easily. The primary components in the Web Stack include (partial list) the Apache HTTP Web server version 2.2.8, Apache Modules Memcached 1.2.5 (distributed memory object system), MySQL(TM) 5.1 Database, lighttpd Web server v 1.4.18, Tomcat Servlet engine 6.0.16, PHP 5.2.5, Ruby 1.8.6, Rails 1.2.3, RubyGems 0.9.0, Mongrel 1.0.1, fcgi package, RedCloth (text parsing), Perl 5.8.8 and extensions, Squid proxy server 2.16.x.
